I'm supposed to be doing a report on Marcel Duchamp on Wednesday. So, characteristically before and until the last possible moment, I'm fucking around. One of the oft-forgotten things that Duchamp brought to light in this world was the Roto Relief. These disk shaped images were meant to be played on something like a phono player at 33 rpm's. If you stare at one, with one eye shut, the image should pop out to become eerily 3D. Here's one I made:
I came to this design after drawing roto'd rocket ships, which morphed into roto'd penises, and of course, the roto-breast. I thought my color theory skillz would come in handy one of these days. I'm not sure if there is any use for these at all, but it's an interesting exercise in Duchampology. Perhaps I could get one of those cheesy round canvases at the hobby shop, paint the above sucker, and mount it on a wall via a lazy suzan. Then, everyone could just give it a spin! Oh the glee of indifference!
